L&L Fences designs and builds custom decks for homeowners across Plymouth, the South Shore and Cape Cod. You build a deck when you want usable outdoor space that connects to the house, holds furniture and people without bounce, and still looks right in ten years. That comes down to what happens under the boards: footing depth, framing spacing, ledger attachment and flashing. Those are the parts nobody sees and the parts that decide whether the deck lasts.

The build starts with footings dug below the frost line and poured on undisturbed soil, so the structure does not lift when the ground freezes and thaws. The ledger board is bolted to the house rim joist and flashed properly, which is the single most common failure point on decks built badly. Joists are spaced for the decking material you choose, closer for composite laid on a diagonal, standard for pressure-treated. Railings, stairs and any built-in seating are framed as part of the structure rather than added on afterwards.

Pressure-Treated or Composite, and What Each Costs You Later

Pressure-treated lumber is the lower upfront cost and the higher long-term commitment. It resists rot and insects for years, takes stain or paint so you can match the house, and is easy to repair board by board with standard tools. In exchange you clean and reseal it every two to three years, and in a coastal climate you will see boards cup or check over time. If you like the look of real wood and do not mind the maintenance weekend, it is still the honest choice.

Composite decking costs more at the start and almost nothing afterwards. It does not splinter, does not need sealing, holds its color under UV, and shrugs off the moisture that shortens the life of wood on the South Shore and Cape. It gets warmer underfoot in direct summer sun and it cannot be sanded down and refinished, so surface damage is replaced rather than repaired. Over a twenty year window on a coastal property, composite usually wins on total cost.

Whichever surface you pick, the framing underneath is pressure-treated and the hardware is hot-dipped galvanized or stainless. Skimping there is how a deck that looks fine on the surface fails structurally. We also coordinate the deck with your fencing so gates, railings and finish read as one project rather than two contractors working past each other.

Questions

What Homeowners Ask About Decks

Deck projects raise questions about permits, materials and how long the build takes. These are the ones that come up on almost every consultation.

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Massachusetts?

Almost always yes. Most Massachusetts towns require a building permit for a deck attached to the house or raised above a certain height, and the inspection usually covers footings and framing before the decking goes down. Requirements vary by town, so check with your local building department early.

How deep do deck footings need to go?

Below the frost line, which in this part of Massachusetts generally means around four feet. Shallow footings are the reason decks lift and go out of level after a hard winter.

Is composite decking worth the extra cost?

On a coastal property, usually yes. Composite costs more upfront but needs no sealing or staining, holds its color, and does not splinter or rot. Over twenty years the maintenance you skip typically outweighs the higher material price.

How long does a deck build take?

A straightforward single-level deck usually runs several days to about a week once we start, depending on size, height and how the footings go in. Multi-level decks, built-in seating or difficult access add time.

Can you match a new deck to my existing fence?

Yes, and it is worth doing. We build fencing and decks with the same crew, so railing style, post caps and finish can be specified together instead of ending up close but not quite matching.
