Fence & Deck Installation in Sandwich

The oldest town on the Cape, where a street-facing fence has to sit comfortably next to genuinely historic architecture.

Sandwich was settled in 1637 and it shows. Around the village centre, the Boardwalk and the older streets near Shawme Pond, the built environment has a character that a badly chosen fence will fight rather than complement. We spend more time on style here than in most towns, because getting the look wrong is the thing homeowners regret.

Cedar picket and traditional board styles suit the older parts of town. Out toward East Sandwich and the newer subdivisions the constraints loosen and vinyl becomes the practical favourite, particularly on properties catching bay air off Cape Cod Bay. Forestdale, inland and wooded, is different again and gets its own page.

What we plan for in Sandwich

  • Properties in and around the historic district may face additional review on street-facing work. Worth confirming before the layout is finalised.
  • Cape Cod Bay exposure on the north side of town brings salt and winter wind that untreated metal will not survive.
  • Sandy soil across much of Sandwich changes footing requirements compared with the heavier ground further inland.
  • Mature trees near the older village streets mean post lines usually work around root systems rather than through them.

Permits in Sandwich

Cape towns each set their own fence height limits and permit thresholds, and several also carry historic district or conservation review that ordinary zoning does not. We will not quote you a height limit we have not verified for your address. Confirm with the Town of Sandwich Building Department, and if your property sits near a wetland, pond or the coastal bank, ask about conservation commission jurisdiction as well. Attached decks almost always need a permit and an inspection.

Fencing and decks in Sandwich: your questions

Is there extra approval needed for a fence in the Sandwich historic district?

Possibly, depending on exactly where you are and what faces the street. Historic districts in Massachusetts commonly carry review requirements that ordinary residential zoning does not. Check with the Town of Sandwich Building Department and, if your property falls inside a district, the relevant historic commission before ordering material.

What fence style suits an older Sandwich home?

Cedar picket and traditional flat-board styles generally sit best against the older architecture, and a lower front-yard height reads better than a tall one. If you want the traditional look without the maintenance, vinyl picket is a reasonable compromise, though up close it does not have the texture of real cedar.

Which parts of Sandwich do you cover?

All of it. That includes Sandwich Village, East Sandwich, Forestdale, Sagamore Beach and the rest of the town, across ZIP 02563 and 02537. Sandwich sits inside our 35 mile radius from Plymouth, along with the rest of Barnstable County.

What does a fence or deck cost in Sandwich?

It depends on material, linear footage, height, terrain and how many gates you need, and on a typical lot here the run length is the main driver. Most of our residential projects land between $1,500 and $12,000. Estimates are free, quoted line by line, with no hidden fees.

Do I need a permit in Sandwich?

Quite possibly, and the requirements are set locally rather than statewide. Attached decks almost always need a permit and an inspection, and fences above a certain height often do. Confirm with the Town of Sandwich Building Department before you order material. We build to whatever they approve and will flag at the estimate what your project is likely to need.

Any questions I had were answered promptly. The fence installation was done in a timely manner. My home looks very beautiful outside because of the fence enhancement. The installation charges were very fair.
